Here are our top five tips for healthy skin in the winter:

  1. Use an SPF of 30 or higher every day. Yes, even in the winter or on a cloudy day!
  2. Consider professional skincare treatments like lasers, facials, or chemical peels.
  3. Keep your skin barrier intact with an emollient or creamy moisturizer.
  4. Avoid hot showers and try using a humidifier at home to prevent skin from drying out.
  5. Swap your coffee for green tea throughout the day to stay hydrated.

Which Facial Treatment is for you?

What is HydraFacial?

The HydraFacial is often referred to as “the lunchtime facial,” because you’ll need absolutely no downtime after receiving one. It helps with most skin concerns, including oiliness, fine lines, loss of elasticity, hyperpigmentation, large pores, and uneven skin tone.

Although it’s quick, the HydraFacial packs a punch: its patented technology (a small suction-like device) combines multiple steps in one appointment.

Dermal fillers can be used to restore volume and soften folds. Fill tear troughs, plump the lips, and create a more defined cheekbone or jawline. It’s best to come in for filler soon after the engagement; this allows for time to slowly build filler up over months, for a more subtle & natural look.

8-10 Months Before

Begin a series of laser treatments to build collagen & target specific skin issues, as you’ll have time to see how your skin reacts. Results are best in series. As we like to say – one is a treat, but three is a treatment.

Clear + Brilliant and Vbeam are great options for this stage, to improve skin texture, redness, pigmentation, and pores. You still have enough time to complete treatments and give your skin any downtime it needs.

Planning a tropical honeymoon? Consider laser hair removal. It typically takes six sessions spaced six weeks apart to see near-permanent results. We also offer several body-shaping services to remove stubborn fat, smooth cellulite, and tighten up loose skin.

 

5-6 Months Before

Consider a VI Peel to brighten your complexion. Chemical peels are ideal to combat multiple skin issues; sun damage, hyperpigmentation, acne, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin, and more.

Looking to smooth fine lines? It’s best to begin Botox injections—especially if you’re a new patient—at least six months prior to your wedding date to perfect your treatment.

 

3-4 Months Before

By now, your skin should be reaping the benefits of a streamlined, consistent skincare routine. You’ll likely be seeing clearer, brighter, and firmer skin.

This would also be a great time to touch up your injectables. As you approach the wedding day, schedule your last Botox appointment no later than one month prior. This will give you that two-week period for it to take full effect, and you’ll still have an extra buffer of time in case anything needs to be slightly tweaked.

Be sure to plan your treatments around wedding festivities such as bachelorette trips & bridal showers!

 

1-2 Weeks Before

Try to manage stress levels and continue with your established skincare routine.

Pro tip: Avoid any ingredients that can cause excessive inflammation, such as sugar & saturated fats. Your dedication to healthy skin will have your complexion glowing!

What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is usually caused by the increased deposition of melanin in the skin, resulting in a darkening or increased concentration in the natural color of your skin. Hyperpigmentation appears as lesions of different sizes, distributions, and patterns. How susceptible you are to hyperpigmentation is somewhat hereditary, although environmental factors (such as too much sun and heat) can accelerate the visible effects.

Can hyperpigmentation be fixed?

Hyperpigmentation can be challenging as it is, by nature, chronic and persistent. With increased sun exposure, you may be prone to relapsing episodes as your skin’s surface is repeatedly damaged (again, why prevention is so important)!

 

TREATMENTS FOR SUN DAMAGE

If the hyperpigmentation is moderate to severe, or simply isn’t responding to topical skincare products, we may recommend a more aggressive treatment for stubborn discoloration:

MICRONEEDLING—

Microneedling is a minimally-invasive facial rejuvenation treatment in which tiny needles create hundreds of invisible, controlled puncture wounds on the skin’s surface. Your body responds to this controlled injury by producing collagen, elastin, and new capillaries, resulting in a reduction of scars, improved skin texture, firmness, and hydration.

This treatment, especially when paired with PRP to further increase collagen production, effectively reverses the signs of aging and sun damage, making this an excellent treatment for hyperpigmentation! Depending on your needs, we’ll likely recommend a series of 3, and then repeat every few months for continued sun damage improvement.

IPL/BBL PHOTOFACIAL—

IPL/BBL treatments can brighten and even skin tone to reduce the appearance of sun damage. We use broad band light (BBL) therapy, in which high-intensity pulses of light improve the appearance of red and brown pigment. This is one of the most effective treatments to combat hyperpigmentation as the BBL specifically targets skin cells that contain excess pigment, which will rise to the surface and slough off after the procedure (usually one to two weeks). Most patients can immediately resume normal activity post-treatment. For best results, avoid tanning and sun exposure three weeks before & after treatment!

Q-SWITCHED ALEXANDRITE—

Our Q-Switched Alexandrite, AKA “Alex,” laser is used to remove specific pigmented lesions. Patients with sun spots and brown patchy areas on the face and body can have these lesions easily removed with this laser. The Q-switched Alexandrite laser targets darkly pigmented tissue and leaves surrounding lighter tissues unaffected. The result is a faded pigment in the treated area and improvement in uniformity of skin color.

OUR SECRET TO PLUMP SKIN

We hear lots of buzz about certain skincare ingredients, and hyaluronic acid is no exception.

We’re here to break down why you need it and which products you can find it in.

 

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is your body’s natural hydrator. That’s right, you make it already! The largest amounts are found in the skin. It helps keep skin hydrated, retain water, moisturized, repair skin tissue, transport nutrients, and also keeps your skin plump & bouncy.

It’s also a humectant, meaning it attracts water. That’s why many of our injectable fillers are made with a hyaluronic acid base to build volume in the temples, tear troughs, cheekbones, smile lines, lips, chin, and jawline.

 

Why should I use hyaluronic acid?

As we age, we make less and less of this substance (along with collagen & elastin). Fine lines & wrinkles start to appear more prominent, and it becomes more difficult for the skin to retain water. Dehydrated skin is more prone to premature aging.

That’s where topical hyaluronic acid serums come in!

 

What are the benefits of hyaluronic acid?

Using hyaluronic acid delivers hydration to the skin, plumps it up, and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for a healthy & youthful glow.

This simple molecule can hold up to 1,000 times its molecular weight in water, which means a little goes a long way. When the humidity level is high (like it often is in Alabama), there’s more water in the air outside your skin that hyaluronic acid can pull from to give you hydration!

On the flip side — if you use it in a dry climate with very little moisture in the air around you, it draws moisture away from your skin, causing even more dryness.

EXFOLIATION

“Exfoliation is essential for sloughing off the layer of dead skin that accumulates on the surface, making your complexion look dull and tired.

Because the skin is more likely to become compromised in the winter, if you notice any dryness, redness, or irritation, dial back your use of actives (retinoids and exfoliants such as alpha-hydroxy and beta-hydroxy acids).

I often recommend Clear+Brilliant to fight early signs of aging with minimal downtime to improve skin tone, uneven pigmentation, and enlarged pores to visibly illuminate and brighten your complexion.”

 

HYDRATION

“Focus on hydration from the inside out. Ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin E will be your skin’s best friends — they help to nourish and strengthen your skin barrier.

I also recommend using a soothing cleanser, followed by a hydrating hyaluronic acid serum like SkinCeuticals HA Intensifier. Finally, use an anti-aging cream such as SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore to lock in that moisture and protect the skin barrier.”

 

PROTECTION

These nourishing formulas will hydrate & plump skin no matter how low the temperature gets, but you still need protection.
Just because the temperatures are low doesn’t mean your skin’s defenses should be! Get in the habit of wearing sunscreen every day — especially when skiing, where the snow reflects the sun’s rays.

Antioxidant Defense: Celebrating Vitamin C Day with Dr. Sarah Sawyer

Expert Insights for Healthy, Radiant Skin

Vitamin C is such a powerhouse, it even has its own day! National Vitamin C Day is April 4th, and the timing couldn’t be better. As the days grow longer and the weather turns warmer, more people will spend more time outside. But all that fun in the Alabama sun can have a downside for those who don’t protect their skin.

Exposure to UV radiation, pollution, and other environmental aggressors wreaks havoc on the skin by promoting free radical damage. Antioxidants in any form can help to fight and even reverse this damage. They also protect against skin damage!

In addition to sunscreens, applying vitamin C and other antioxidants directly to the skin is a great way to optimize your protection.

Here’s to enjoying the sunshine safely — and to brighter skin with vitamin C!

 

How do patients’ skincare needs change from the colder, drier winter months to the warmer, more humid days of spring and summer?

Sarah Sawyer, MD: “The first thing I like to remind everybody to do, including myself, is to check your sunscreen expiration dates. Lots of those bottles expired during the winter!

When people are outdoors more in the warmer, humid weather, it can cause a little extra buildup of dead skin, sweat, and oil. A lot of patients will switch to a lighter moisturizer at this time. Hydrating B5 Gel from SkinCeuticals is a great choice in the summer because it’s a serum, not a lotion or a cream, for people who don’t need as much moisturization in the summer. It contains a favorite ingredient, hyaluronic acid, which is water-loving, so many people enjoy using it.

I also remind people if they’re using retinol that it can create sun sensitivity. Patients should wash off retinol in the morning if they apply it the night before. People may change their cleanser to address the buildup of dead skin cells and sometimes sunscreen or sweat or oil. They might want an exfoliating scrub, like Micro Exfoliating Scrub. A granular scrub can give a deeper exfoliation or more of a foaming action, so users get a cleaner finish.

Then, of course, there is vitamin C. CE Ferulic is a great complement to sunscreens because it helps to neutralize residual free radicals in the upper layers of skin that sunscreen alone cannot prevent. I make sure that my patients always have some sort of antioxidant or vitamin C serum to put on every morning once spring hits.”

 

In addition to UV, what other exposures increase with more time outdoors? How should patients protect themselves?

Dr. Sawyer: “In addition to more ultraviolet radiation in the spring and summer, we are exposed to more environmental pollution, as well, because we’re outside more. A big change over the last 10 or 15 years in medicine is the recognition that inflammation causes most diseases, and that’s mediated by free radicals. Reactive molecules produce additional reactive molecules in a negative cascade that, in the skin, leads to the destruction of collagen and elastin. Any type of antioxidant, whether it’s topical or ingested, is going to work as a blanket over that reaction. They squelch the free radical activity of these molecules and help prevent damage before it even starts.

To ensure skin protection, it is essential to use topical vitamin C and sunscreen. Topical antioxidants, if formulated correctly, absorb well into the skin. SkinCeuticals has shown through their science that when vitamin C is absorbed in the skin, it’s there for up to 72 hours. That helps protect your skin for more than just the day you put it on. Even so, you should apply it daily to maintain the levels.”

 

Do you see a role for vitamin C or antioxidants in conjunction with procedures that you do?

Dr. Sawyer: “I like to make sure every patient is on a good skin care regimen. Right after sunscreen, vitamin C is the number two priority for me, especially when it comes to pigmentation and wrinkles—the two main complaints about aging. These serums can start the cleanup engine of the skin. Vitamin C not only protects your skin, but it helps to rehabilitate your skin.

Post-procedure, vitamin C can support healing and help remove pigmentation. SkinCeuticals has tested its vitamin C formulations used immediately after ablative and non-ablative procedures. Because the skin can be sensitive after ablative procedures, I tell patients to try it on a small patch of skin, and if it stings or burns then just wait a day or two.”

 

Do you change vitamin C recommendations based on the patient?

Dr. Sawyer: “Vitamin C is for everybody! I typically think about skin type and the condition of the patient’s skin. SkinCeuticals has three main unique formulas.

Often, I pick C E Ferulic for people who have normal to dry aging skin who don’t have any active acne or issues with any breakouts.

If somebody has unwanted pigment or problematic skin, then I recommend Phloretin CF, which is just a little bit lighter. It has also been shown to be effective against stressors in the environment and helps with pigmentation.

The newest vitamin C on the block is Silymarin CF, and it plays a key role in reducing excess sebum and lipid peroxidation in the skin. Before this came out, acne-prone patients had to minimize their use of vitamin C. Silymarin CF is better tolerated, and there’s just enough salicylic acid, a popular acne active ingredient, to help pores stay clean and help keep acne under control. It was shown in trials to benefit people concerned about blemishes and breakouts.

Patients should cleanse the skin, apply their vitamin C serum, then layer on any other products and, of course, sunscreen. The earlier we start patients on vitamin C, the better the patient’s skin will be, and we’ll have less sun damage by the time they pursue cosmetic treatment!”
