November is Healthy Skin Month

November is here, and that means it’s National Healthy Skin Month!

Our number one priority here at Dermatology & Laser of Alabama is always to help you achieve healthy, beautiful skin.

Here are our top five tips for healthy skin in the winter:

  1. Use an SPF of 30 or higher every day. Yes, even in the winter or on a cloudy day!
  2. Consider professional skincare treatments like lasers, facials, or chemical peels.
  3. Keep your skin barrier intact with an emollient or creamy moisturizer.
  4. Avoid hot showers and try using a humidifier at home to prevent skin from drying out.
  5. Swap your coffee for green tea throughout the day to stay hydrated.

Dealing with dry skin, redness, or rosacea? We asked our skincare professionals what we need to keep skin happily hydrated through the colder weather. Here are our aesthetician’s top product recommendations:

“I like the SkinCeuticals Gentle Cleanser Cream and/or Soothing Foaming Cleanser. It nourishes and hydrates the skin, without it feeling tight.

The Phyto Corrective Mask is great, and you can even sleep with it at night once or twice a week for extra hydration and to calm the skin. I like the Phyto Corrective Gel as well for daily use to help with any redness.

Hydrating B5 Gel is also great to help bind moisture to the skin since rosacea patients have more of an impaired barrier!”

– Nadia Hoffman, Aesthetician

“The SkinCeuticals Epidermal Repair Cream would be great as well for sensitive or compromised skin, used as needed to help with redness or irritation.

Also, the CE Ferulic serum could help with rosacea – it’s our bestselling vitamin C serum and a very safe antioxidant that helps ward off free radicals in the environment.”

– Riley Pitman, Aesthetician

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and it’s estimated that one in five Americans will develop it during their lifetime.

At Dermatology & Laser of Alabama, we understand the gravity of this statistic, but we also believe in the power of preventative skincare. Healthy, glowing skin isn’t just a cosmetic goal –  it’s the foundation of confidence in our patients.

Thankfully, you can take steps to protect your skin and prevent further sun damage!

Apply Sunscreen Every Day

Sunscreen isn’t just for beach or lake days; it should be a daily essential, rain or shine! One of the best things you can do is wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day. Apply it generously to all exposed areas of your skin, including your face, neck, chest, and hands. Reapply every two hours of sun exposure to keep your protection active, especially if you’re sweating or swimming!

Wear Protective Clothing

A fabulous hat can be one of your best defenses against the sun this summer. It’s especially important after a laser treatment, microneedling, or chemical peel, as your skin is more vulnerable while in recovery. Opt for lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses with UV protection. Darker colors and tightly woven fabrics offer better protection than light, loosely woven clothing.

Stay Hydrated, Inside & Out

Hydration is key to maintaining healthy skin, especially in the sun. When unprotected skin is damaged by UV exposure, it thickens and dehydrates, leading to rough, flaky skin or pigmentation. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Our team at DLA loves drinking electrolyte water from LMNT or Liquid I.V.

We also recommend adding nourishing serums (such as the SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5) to your regimen and booking a Hydrafacial or JetFusion treatment to restore your glow!

Schedule Annual Skin Checks

We also recommend seeing your medical dermatologist for a full-body annual skin check at least once a year, and visiting even more often if you are higher-risk. Make it a habit to regularly examine your skin for any changes, including new moles, freckles, or spots that have changed in size, shape, or color.

Our team is happy to recommend medical dermatologists here in Birmingham for you to check this important appointment off your annual to-do list!
