Life is too short to hide your legs!
The appearance of spider veins can be embarrassing, especially when wearing shorts or swimsuits. Many people work hard to get their legs in shape, but avoid showing their legs because of these unwanted veins.
Sclerotherapy is the gold standard method for safely & effectively reducing these veins. Now, we can obliterate these networks with the simple injection of a sclerosing solution.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure that involves injecting a solution through a tiny needle into each affected vein, causing the veins to collapse & fade. Eliminating spider veins will not harm your circulatory system, as the blood is gradually diverted to a healthy vessel over time!
Foam sclerotherapy is the latest development in the sclerotherapy field, now available in Birmingham at Dermatology & Laser of Alabama. When this FDA-approved solution is injected into the veins, it quickly & effectively fades spider veins with better results in fewer treatments.
Benefits of Sclerotherapy:
- Minimal downtime
- Quick treatment sessions
- Reduces the appearance of superficial veins
Compared to surgical removal of veins, sclerotherapy costs less, requires no hospital stay or anesthesia, and allows a quicker return to work and normal activities.
Sclerotherapy has an excellent success rate and typically eliminates up to 90% of the treated vessels. Following completion of sclerotherapy treatments, the spider veins usually fade within 6-8 weeks.

Spider Vein Sclerotherapy FAQ's
Before sclerotherapy, you will have an initial consultation with Sylvia that includes a thorough examination of your unwanted spider veins. This assessment helps us to determine if you are a good candidate for foam sclerotherapy treatment. Consultations and treatments may be performed on the same day.
During a sclerotherapy treatment session, multiple injections are necessary to perform the procedure and deliver the sclerosing agent into the veins. However, the needle used is tiny – about the same size as the needles used for wrinkle injections. Patients often describe the injections as feeling like mosquito bites or pinpricks. The discomfort associated with the procedure lasts only as long as the treatment takes to perform, usually 30-45 minutes! For those with lower pain tolerance, we offer self-administered Pronox laughing gas upon request.
Side effects may include swelling, bruising, itching, and occasionally hyperpigmentation. All of these are temporary and will resolve with time.
Depending on the extent of the affected area, more than one treatment session may be necessary to achieve the desired results. The larger the vein network, or the more severe the issue, the longer it will take to fully treat. Once a vein is treated & absorbs back into the body, it’s gone for good! Any new veins that develop over time can simply be “touched up.” After your sclerotherapy treatment is complete, we may schedule regular maintenance appointments to ensure your results remain flawless.
Following the procedure, you will need to wear compression stockings for 1 week to maximize the treatment results. This constant pressure helps facilitate the breakdown of the vein wall. Our favorite medical-grade stockings are available for purchase at our office and will be offered to you at your treatment!
While normal activities can be resumed immediately following the treatment, we do suggest that you refrain from intense activity involving the lower legs (squats, leg presses, or extensive running). It is essential to walk regularly to encourage good circulation after you have had sclerotherapy. Avoid direct sunlight on the treated area for four weeks after treatment.
