The Importance of Prevention in Skincare

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

So, what exactly does prevention mean, and how do we achieve it? Taking proactive steps to prevent skin issues before they arise can save you time, effort, and money! It all starts with establishing a consistent skincare routine that helps to maintain your skin health and addresses common concerns like premature aging, acne, and sun damage.

1. USE BROAD SPECTRUM SPF DAILY

Studies have shown that up to 80-90% of aging is caused by sun damage! Overexposure to the sun can cause damage like changes in texture, weakened skin elasticity, premature wrinkling, and sagging. In addition, UV rays affect collagen and can cause rapid destruction in its production.

2. INCORPORATE COLLAGEN-BOOSTING TREATMENTS

Collagen, the building block of our skin, plays a crucial role in maintaining its strength, elasticity, and firmness.

As we age, the natural production of collagen starts to decline. Both women and men lose collagen steadily at around 1.5% a year, usually from the age of 25 onwards. By the age of 40, collagen drops dramatically, leading to visible signs of aging such as dullness, wrinkles, and sagging skin.

While there is no magic potion to halt the aging process completely, adopting preventive skin care measures can significantly slow down the collagen decrease and preserve our skin’s youthfulness.

3. PROTECT YOUR SKIN BARRIER

Maintaining the health and integrity of the skin’s protective barrier is essential when our skin is constantly exposed to environmental stressors like UV damage, pollution, blue light from screens, and even weather changes that come with travel.

Prioritize gentle skincare products that effectively nourish, fortify, and shield the skin barrier. Hydration is key for sustaining skin vitality, as well as incorporating an exfoliant to keep the skin revitalized.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and it’s estimated that one in five Americans will develop it during their lifetime.

At Dermatology & Laser of Alabama, we believe in the power of preventative skincare. Healthy, glowing skin isn’t just a cosmetic goal –  it’s the foundation of confidence in our patients.

Thankfully, you can take steps to protect your skin and prevent further sun damage!

Apply Sunscreen Every Day

Sunscreen isn’t just for beach or lake days; it should be a daily essential, rain or shine! One of the best things you can do is wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day. Apply it generously to all exposed areas of your skin, including your face, neck, chest, and hands. Reapply every two hours of sun exposure to keep your protection active, especially if you’re sweating or swimming!

Wear Protective Clothing

A fabulous hat can be one of your best defenses against the sun this summer. It’s especially important after a laser treatment, microneedling, or chemical peel, as your skin is more vulnerable while in recovery. Opt for lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses with UV protection. Darker colors and tightly woven fabrics offer better protection than light, loosely woven clothing.

Stay Hydrated, Inside & Out

Hydration is key to maintaining healthy skin, especially in the sun. When unprotected skin is damaged by UV exposure, it thickens and dehydrates, leading to rough, flaky skin or pigmentation. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Our team at DLA loves drinking electrolyte water from LMNT or Liquid I.V.

We also recommend adding nourishing serums (such as the SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5) to your regimen and booking a Hydrafacial or JetFusion treatment to restore your glow!

Schedule Annual Skin Checks

We also recommend seeing your medical dermatologist for a full-body annual skin check at least once a year, and visiting even more often if you are higher-risk. Make it a habit to regularly examine your skin for any changes, including new moles, freckles, or spots that have changed in size, shape, or color.

Schedule ahead with Dr. Marilyn Zabielinski to check this important appointment off your annual to-do list!
