April is Rosacea Awareness Month

SEEING RED?

April is Rosacea Awareness Month! This common, yet misunderstood inflammation of the skin can cause chronic flare-ups of redness, facial swelling, burning, and painful bumps.

Tired of looking in the mirror to see a ruddy, flushed complexion? You’re not alone. Rosacea is often seen in those with naturally fair skin, and is more commonly diagnosed in women. It’s frustrating to cover with heavy makeup and can affect your confidence.

If you struggle with redness in your skin, we are here to help you. Dermatology & Laser of Alabama provides treatment for all kinds of cosmetic concerns, including rosacea or visible facial veins. Dr. Sarah Sawyer and Dr. Marilyn Zabielisnki can work with you to determine the best possible solution.

MANAGING YOUR ROSACEA

Rosacea is notoriously tough, as its true cause is still considered a “mystery.” If you haven’t seen a medical dermatologist yet, start with an appointment with Dr. Marilyn Zabielinski to create a customized treatment plan for your skin.

At home, avoid the triggers: Heat, sun, caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, etc. This is often easier said than done in a hot Alabama summer!

Follow these lifestyle tips to minimize skin redness:

  • Apply cool compresses or use an ice roller
  • Moisturize regularly
  • Avoid potentially irritating products (retinoids, acids, fragrances, etc.)
  • Try an anti-inflammatory diet
  • Decrease sun exposure
  • Drink more water!

HARNESS THE POWER OF LIGHT

PhotoFacial IPL/BBL therapy uses concentrated pulses of light to trigger healing processes in targeted areas. It is used to treat rosacea, visible facial veins, and other conditions, including age spots, sun damage, and birthmarks. It’s safe, minimally invasive, and requires no downtime. IPL PhotoFacial treatments can clear up redness and encourage a healthier, clearer complexion.

We also offer VBeam pulsed dye laser treatments. Even if you don’t have rosacea, you might notice broken blood vessels or spidery veins on your face. While these are mostly harmless, they can affect your complexion.

SOOTHING SKINCARE

We also offer several skincare products that can help reduce redness. Ingredients shown to be helpful with rosacea include anti-inflammatories like aloe, oats, chamomile, azelaic acid, and niacinamide.

Tranexamic acid is also wonderful for hyperpigmentation as a powerful anti-inflammatory and is currently being studied for rosacea.

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS

  • SkinCeuticals PhytoA+ Moisturizer – Contains Azelaic acid
  • SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense Serum – Contains Tranexamic acid
  • SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Mask
  • EltaMD UV Recovery SPF

Our skin is constantly changing, and while it might not always be red, it’s best to have trusted products that help calm & heal any flare-ups at the ready.

Whether you over-exfoliate one night and wake up with redness or spend a bit too much time in the sun at the lake, investing in products that will quickly bring any inflammation down will make all the difference!

COOLING FACIALS

As for aesthetic treatments, we often recommend cooling facials such as our JetFusion facial or a modified Hydrafacial treatment to soothe your skin even further. Our aestheticians are experienced in dealing with rosacea or redness-prone skin, and can offer a targeted “booster” specifically for calming inflammation.
