Aviclear

Innovative Laser Treatment for Acne

After months of evaluating the best laser technology available, we’re thrilled to announce: AviClear is now at Dermatology & Laser of Alabama.

AviClear joins our existing lineup of acne treatments, including facials, chemical peels, and lasers for redness, scarring, and pigmentation. Think of it as another powerful tool in our toolbox — one that works beautifully on its own or alongside other treatments, depending on your skin goals.

We’re excited to now offer it as part of our comprehensive approach to acne care here in Birmingham.

What Is AviClear?

For acne patients, this is a groundbreaking treatment worth knowing about!

AviClear is the first & only FDA-cleared laser that treats acne at the source, not just the surface.

It targets the sebaceous glands in your skin — the oil-producing glands responsible for clogged pores. By suppressing oil production at the source, it clears existing acne and helps prevent future breakouts.

Benefits of AviClear

  • Targets oil at the source — not just the surface. Long-term reduction, with permanent results for many patients.
  • No prescriptions, pills, or monthly blood tests. Real results without adding daily medications.
  • Works on all skin tones & acne types, from hormonal breakouts to more persistent acne.
  • Virtually no downtime. Most patients walk out and right back into their day with only slight redness.

How AviClear Works at DLA

The Science Behind the Solution

AviClear uses a 1726 nm wavelength laser to precisely target and suppress the sebaceous glands, reducing the oil production that leads to breakouts.

Each treatment is performed right here in our office by our experienced team of laser technicians. Before your session, we apply a topical numbing cream to keep you comfortable, and the AviClear device features a built-in cooling tip for additional comfort during treatment.

The number of sessions needed varies from patient to patient, and we’ll work with you to create a plan that fits your skin and your goals. Results develop over time as your skin continues to clear and adjust.

Who Is AviClear For?

AviClear was designed for anyone dealing with acne. It’s a particularly exciting option for:

  • Anyone with oily, acne-prone skin If excess oil is at the root of your breakouts, AviClear was made with you in mind. Its ability to reduce sebum production long-term makes it one of the most targeted acne treatments available.
  • Teens & young adults Whether you’re navigating your first flare-ups or dealing with acne that’s stuck around longer than expected, AviClear offers a lasting solution without the need for daily pills or an ongoing skincare prescription.
  • Adults with persistent or hormonal acne Hormonal breakouts in adulthood are incredibly common — and incredibly frustrating. We often hear from women who are tired of hormonal breakouts each month at the time of their menstrual cycle. This is a great treatment option for you.
  • Accutane candidates, or parents of teens considering Accutane AviClear targets the same root cause as Accutane without harsh side effects. For parents with concerns about putting their teen on Accutane, it’s worth a conversation. No prescriptions. No pills. No monthly blood tests. Just lasting, clearer skin.
  • Those who’ve tried everything else If topicals, antibiotics, and other treatments haven’t gotten you where you want to be, AviClear offers a different approach — one that works from the inside out, pairing well with other holistic treatments available at DLA.

What to Expect with Aviclear

Before: We’ll start with a short consultation to evaluate your skin and talk through your goals. If you have additional concerns like acne scarring or redness, we’ll map out a personalized treatment plan.

During: We apply a topical numbing cream before your session to help with comfort, and the AviClear device features a built-in cooling tip throughout treatment. Some patients experience mild discomfort during the session — everyone’s tolerance is a little different — but our team will check in with you throughout to make sure you’re doing well.

After: Most patients experience little to no significant downtime. You may notice some slight redness or dryness for a few hours after your treatment. Some patients also experience a temporary “purge” — a brief increase in breakouts as the skin adjusts — which is a normal part of the process.

Results: AviClear results develop over time. Your skin continues to clear in the weeks following treatment, so give it time to work. We’ll be with you throughout the process, answering questions and tracking your progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

AviClear is an innovative acne treatment that uses advanced laser technology to target and treat the root causes of acne.

It’s an FDA-approved, non-invasive procedure designed to reduce acne by suppressing the skin’s sebaceous (oil) glands, thereby decreasing oil production and acne breakouts.

AviClear uses a specific 1726 nm wavelength laser to target the sebaceous glands in the skin.

The laser energy reduces the activity of these glands, leading to a significant decrease in oil production. This directly addresses the primary factor contributing to acne, providing a long-term solution rather than a temporary fix.

Comfort levels vary from patient to patient, but we take every step to make your experience as smooth as possible. Before your session, we apply a topical numbing cream to the treatment area, and the AviClear device features a built-in cooling tip that helps manage sensation throughout. Most patients find treatment very tolerable with these measures in place — but we’ll always check in and treat the skin at a pace that works for you.

Virtually none! Most patients head right back to their normal activities after their appointment. You may experience some slight redness for a few hours following treatment, and some patients go through a temporary “purge” of breakouts as the skin adjusts to reduced oil production. This is normal and temporary. Your provider will walk you through what to expect and how to care for your skin after each session.

AviClear results reveal themselves over time. Many patients begin to see improvements within weeks following treatment, but optimal results are typically observed two to three months after completing the full treatment course. Rather than an overnight fix, think of it as your skin gradually resetting.

The number of sessions varies from patient to patient. We often see 3 sessions giving the best long-term results. During your initial appointment consultation, we’ll evaluate your skin and recommend a personalized treatment plan based on your specific needs & goals.

Yes — AviClear is safe and effective across all skin tones. This is one of the things that makes it such a versatile and exciting treatment option.

For many patients, yes. AviClear targets excess sebum production — the same root cause that Accutane addresses — but does so externally through the skin rather than systemically. That means no impact on your liver, hormones, or overall health. It’s a great conversation to have during your appointment, especially if you or your teen have been considering Accutane but have concerns about side effects.

AviClear is specifically designed to treat active acne by reducing oil production — it’s not a scarring treatment. The great news is that we offer a range of laser and resurfacing treatments here at Dermatology & Laser of Alabama to address acne scars and pigmentation. We’d love to help you create a full plan that addresses both.
